Maija Vitola – Zitmane was born in Latvia. Acquired her Bachelors and Masters degrees at Art Academy of Latvia, Metal Design Department. For a period of time she soul-searched and expressed herself in different fields – studied iconography and worked in a sculpture workshop. Currently active in the jewellery art field.

The creative process is her inner need, without which she cannot imagine her daily life.

“The inspiration for my work is the course of a human life, the experience gained in it, the fundamental values that layer by layer makes the jewel something valuable. For me very important is to capture and express my feelings in symbols that are dear to me. This helps when I share a deeply painful personal experience, without making a piece of jewellery emotionally heavy.

I don't prefer using new technologies creating my works - for me very important is connection between my mind and hands - I think there can never be a replacement for human brain and hand skills.”
